Join Bistro Blackwood and the two winemakers behind the award-winning CRFT wines at 6pm on March 7th for a wonderful insight into their boutique winery.
CRFT is the culmination of a long-held dream between Winemakers Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries who are passionate about small batch, single vineyards wines.
If you haven’t attended a Winemaker Waiter event before, it’s a great way to enjoy the regular Bistro Blackwood menu and learn more about the local wine-making community as the winemakers pour and talk you through their produce throughout the night.
This event will feature four of CRFT’s wines poured by winemakers Helbig and Ries as they offer insight into their winemaking process and the notes on each of their varieties. It’s the perfect opportunity to discover why CRFT are making a name for themselves as the premier winery for single vineyard wines across South Australia’s sub-regions.
About the pair:
After meeting in 2005 the couple soon realised their shared passion for single vineyard Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Driven by their passion for small batch wines, it was on a holiday when they discovered a new variety of wine – Austrian variety Grüner Veltliner – which fuelled their enthusiasm for single vineyard wines.
Helbig believes that drinkers are starting to make more considered choices about what they’re consuming – not unlike the paddock to plate movement. Coining the phrase ‘vineyard to glass’, she believes people want to, and should, know more about the people making their wines.
“The big wineries have a label and that’s it, there’s nothing personal. I think that’s what people want, that personal touch.”
Reis believes that whilst Australia is known more for its blends, that there’s much Australians have yet to discover about the historic and unique vineyards right on their doorstep.
“[The Adelaide Hills] has always been the top cool-climate region in the state, but for years so much fruit has been lost to blends of bigger companies,” says Ries. “So, we wanted to start drawing focus to individual vineyards. That’s the kind of stuff we’re really interested in.”
Founded in 2012, CRFT is a passion project of both Helbig and Reis. Built upon a shared philosophy and love for single-site wines where the vineyard is king – their wines have quickly made a name for themselves in the highly-competitive South Australian market.
In 2016, CRFT was named one of James Halliday’s Top 10 New Wineries in his 2016 Wine Companion and in 2018 their K1 Gruner Veltliner was announced as one of the top 10 wines in the Hot 100
